O’Brien’s interdisciplinary work covers a broad spectrum of lighting areas; the lighting of exteriors and interiors for public/private buildings, market squares and public spaces, city master planning, sustainable lighting concepts for the built environment and unique one off lighting fixtures.

O'Brien’s work in lighting design fuses art with high tech in order to achieve works of universal quality where his understanding of the science of engineering blends with his extensive knowledge of light, architecture and art in both theory and practice.

O’Brien creates innovative solutions that are energy conscious, an expression of "our times" or the "Zeitgeist" in which we live and yet “respect the heritage” that has made us.
